Netflix Implements Password Sharing Restrictions in UAE, Taking a Cue from Global Crackdown
Starting
July 20, residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been notified of
Netflix's new regulations, prohibiting the sharing of passwords beyond their
homes, as reported by the Khaleej Times. This move is part of Netflix's broader
initiative to curb widespread password sharing practices.
According to a Netflix customer service representative, the updated rules only permit password sharing and account access among people residing within the same household. To enforce this, Netflix will monitor WiFi networks and IP addresses of devices logged into each account.
This crackdown on password sharing is not limited to UAE alone; Netflix has already implemented similar restrictions in over 100 countries, including major markets like the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), France, Germany, Australia, Singapore, Mexico, and Brazil.
However, in a bid to accommodate customers' needs, Netflix has introduced a new feature that allows paying subscribers to add an extra member from outside their household to their account, albeit for an additional monthly fee. The process has been streamlined, enabling members to transfer profiles to new accounts while retaining viewing history and personalized recommendations.
The initiative comes as Netflix seeks to enhance revenue streams by encouraging individual subscriptions rather than shared accounts. Earlier this year, the company began this endeavor in its largest market, the US.
With this step, Netflix aims to strike a balance between addressing password sharing concerns and providing users with a user-friendly way to enjoy their favorite content individually.
