"WHO Donates Medical Van and Testing Kits to Fight HIV Outbreak in Larkana, Sindh"




 

A high-level meeting addresses HIV outbreak in Larkana, Sindh about progress and actions taken to combating the HIV. Minister of health issues directives and strategies discussed to end HIV. Partnership for health in between who supports Sindh in tackling HIV outbreak in Larkana.


KARACHI: In an effort to combat the HIV outbreak in Larkana, a significant high-level meeting was convened at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) Sindh. Chaired by the Minister of Health and Population Welfare Sindh, along with the co-chairmanship of the WHO Representative Pakistan, the meeting focused on assessing the progress made since the HIV mission in 2019.


During the meeting, directives were issued by the Minister of Health to various entities, including the District Administration, District Health Department, CDC-HIV, Sindh Health Care Commission, Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, and PPHI. These directives encompassed crucial areas such as tackling quackery, enhancing infection prevention and control measures, ensuring safe blood transfusion practices, implementing effective screening and treatment protocols, and raising community awareness.

A notable attendance of key stakeholders and officials was observed, including Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs), Health Advisor to the Chief Minister, Secretary Health Sindh, Director General Health Services Sindh, Commissioner Larkana, Deputy Commissioners of Larkana Division, District Health Officers of Larkana Division, CEO Sindh Health Care Commission, Secretary Sindh Blood Transfusion Authority, COO PPHI, Deputy and Additional Director of CDC (HIV/Hepatitis), as well as representatives from UN agencies such as WHO, UNICEF, and UNAIDS.


The WHO Representative Pakistan made a generous contribution during the meeting, donating an Integrated Mobile Medical Van and Testing kits to the Minister of Health Sindh. Moreover, the WHO extended its commitment to supporting the Department of Health Sindh in establishing a robust system aimed at ending the HIV outbreak in Larkana.

Following the handing over ceremony, a stakeholders' meeting was convened under the joint chairmanship of WHO and the Department of Health Sindh. This meeting brought together the District Health team of Larkana Division, Medical Superintendents of tertiary and secondary care hospitals within the division, key stakeholders, partners, and representatives from UN agencies. The session provided a platform for presenting essential data and conducting an in-depth discussion on the action plan.

The series of meetings signifies a concerted effort to tackle the HIV outbreak in Larkana, with collaborative measures being implemented to prevent further spread, enhance healthcare practices, and raise public awareness. The engagements aim to establish a strong response system, ultimately ensuring the well-being of the affected communities.
